Small and rare Zaandam wall clock! The ultimate piece to add to a collection of Dutch clocks. Compare this one with other Zaandam clocks you see and you will directly see the difference! Elegance on the wall is this old model. The Zaanse or Zaandam clock originated in Zaandam a town near Amsterdam. Various varieties have been made, over a long period of time.
This clock features are:
- Gorgeous dark walnut art nouveau case.
- 1920s old.
- Brass dial with roman numbers.
- On top an atlas figure. According to Greek mythology; Atlas carries the kingdom of heaven on his shoulder as a punishment for his pride for fighting Zeus, that way he is preventing heaven to fall down on earth. Atlas is also the God of Astronomy that explains somewhat the presence on clocks. He is standing on top of the bell. On the top front ornament 3 woman figures, representing faith, hope and charity, on the side ornaments 2 lions and a cartouche representing the city shield of Amsterdam.
- On the front there is a Dutch text “Nu elck sijn sin” which means to each his wish!
- The pendulum is a man on a horse, the courier of the king, swinging in front of the tail.
- 1 day clockwork in excellent running condition.
- It has a distinct bell chime, one time for the half and a full set of strikes for the full hour.
- Two brass pear shaped weights, not on chains but on ropes with counter weights at the end to keep the rope under tension.
- Small doors on the sides of the clock, to access the clockwork.
- Nice brass ornaments and applications around the dial and heavy bronze columns on the front and back of the case.
- Approx 17″ or 43 cm long and 6 1/2″ or 17 cm wide and 4 1/2″ or 11 cm deep.
- In excellent condition, few chips on the case, signs of use as to be expected for a clock this old. Some skills with clocks required, pendulum hangs from the roof.
