We call these “worteldoek” freely translated that means carrot cloth, the name came from German farm workers who travelled from Germany and had in these kind of cloths their belongings and tools to harvest carrots. The noble picked up on the patterns and made them fashionable with Kashmir patterns hence the paisley shawl. Eventually they had all kind of use; behind the coat rack in a triangle form to keep the chalk from the coats. And of course as a shawl.”
Gorgeous antique Dutch Paisley shawl/table cloth. Nice arts and crafts pattern. Also called “ Bietkleed” or “worteldoek” because of the color of beetroot. These shawls are also used as table cloth or behind a coat rack. Typical Dutch folklore item. Usable on both sides. Not sure where it is made of. There may be a few fringes missing.
